Community Centered
At The Shirley Aninias School community means our students, families, teachers, therapists, community members, alumni and their families coming together to support one another. Everyone works together to create an environment where they are welcomed and valued. At The Shirley Aninias School, family involvement at the school-wide level allows our students to engage with, and be included in the community in a meaningful manner. The carryover of our student’s acquired skills throughout various settings is a testament to when our school team and families collaborate to build a strong support system. Some examples of our students involvement in our community are:
- The kindness table at the playground, where free snacks and affirmations were handed out.
- Playing at the playground with other children from different schools.
- School-wide reading peer buddies.
- The spring stroll, where our students handed our flowers to local schools and businesses.
- Writing thank you cards and delivering pizza lunch to our local firefighters.
At The Shirley Aninias School, we believe in supporting our students as meaningful members of their communities even beyond their academic tenure with us. This includes bringing our alumni back as staff members. Currently we have former students who work at The Shirley Aninias School in a variety of capacities, where they continue to acquire new skills while also making a difference in their immediate community. Their contributions provide us with valuable feedback, drawn from their personal experiences and unique perspectives.
